„This Changes Everything“ - panel discussion and free screening of a documentary inspired by Naomi Klein

Naomi klein web

Zelena akcija/Friends of the Earth Croatia invites you to a panel discussion and free premiere of "This changes everything" (according to the book by Canadian author Naomi Klein), to be held on February 29th in Kino Europa (Cinema Europe) in Zagreb.

The consequences of climate change are already felt everywhere in the world, but the redistribution of these effects is not the same. Developing countries in the Global South are suffering the consequences of 200 years of pollution by Western industrialized countries, from super typhoons and flooding to extreme drought and fires. As a result, social and economic inequalities are increasingly deepening, the poor are becoming poorer and corporations richer, while citizens are suffering hunger, diseases, and more frequent forced migrations.

But what if climate change is our (last) opportunity to build a more just world? The possibility for rejecting failed economic systems, for transforming the global economy and political systems? But are we able to do it all on time? Nothing is certain. Nothing, except the fact that climate change is changing everything.

To be able to transform our society and the world in a fair way, it is necessary to connect the movements for climate, social and economic justice - environmental organizations, trade unions, human rights organisations, anti-racist groups, Indigenous peoples, etc.

Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.
Directed by Avi Lewis, and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller This Changes Everything, the film presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Beijing and beyond.

Interwoven with these stories of struggle is Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.

  • Panel discussion: „Climate change as an opportunity for building a more just world“ (Kino Europa, hall Muller, 17:00-19:00)

At the panel discussion, we will hear examples of cooperation between trade unions, social movements and environmental organizations in Croatia and globally, and why this kind of approach is also needed when it comes to climate change. We will also discuss next steps for the global climate justice movement after the adoption of the new climate agreement at the UN conference in Paris (COP21), and what the global and local implications are.

GUEST SPEAKERS:

  • Asad Rehman (Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland, appearing in the documentary „This Changes Everything“): Reflection on COP21 and why we need to build a diverse global climate and social justice movement (via skype)
  • Anabella Rosemberg (ITUC – International Trade Union Confederation): The role of unions in tackling climate change (via skype)
  • Luka Tomac (Friends of the Earth Croatia): Building a low-carbon society in Croatia
  • Marina Ivandić (OWID – Organisation for workers' initiative and democratisation): Connecting labor and social struggles with the environmental movement in Croatia
  • Zoran Milić (Franciscan Secular Order): Encyclical 'Laudato si' - the climate crisis is a matter of social justice
  • Mladen Domazet (Institute for Political ecology): Degrowth - a conceptual framework for a new era
