Speaking Up About Menstruation! A Conference on Health and Sustainability
To mark Period Poverty Week, Zelena akcija (Friends of the Earth Croatia), in partnership with other European organisations and within the framework of the MENSY project, invites you to a conference dedicated to raising awareness about menstrual health, tackling period poverty, and promoting sustainable solutions.
The conference will take place on Wednesday, 14 May, from 9:30 to 14:00, at the premises of the Roda Association, located at Jurja Žerjavića 10, Zagreb.
Menstrual health is a fundamental human right, intrinsically linked to gender equality and environmental protection. Nevertheless, it remains heavily stigmatised and taboo, and is too often excluded from public discourse.
What to expect
The conference will bring together experts, activists, media representatives, policymakers, and the general public to jointly explore key issues relating to menstrual health. Through two dynamic panel discussions, we will cover the following topics:
- Panel 1: Period Poverty and Challenges
This session will open a conversation on the pressing issue of period poverty in Croatia and beyond. We will examine the health and environmental impacts of single-use menstrual products, and present relevant research shedding light on this significant subject. Particular attention will be given to mapping the challenges of period poverty and the environmental unsustainability of menstrual products in Croatia.
- Panel 2: Future Solutions and Visions for Menstrual Justice
The second panel will focus on identifying sustainable solutions and visions for achieving menstrual justice. We will explore the roles of policy, education, and inspiring community-led initiatives, as well as the importance of small businesses in this space. Our aim is to encourage discussion on ways to combat period poverty by breaking taboos and empowering people who menstruate, through a gender-just approach.
Speakers: To be announced soon
Both panels will include interactive Q&A sessions, providing opportunities for deeper dialogue and the exchange of ideas and experiences.
A coffee break is scheduled between the panels, and the event will conclude with a shared lunch to encourage further networking and connection.
We warmly invite all interested participants to join this important conference and contribute to building a society committed to achieving menstrual justice, where menstruation and the challenges of period poverty are discussed openly and without shame.
Please note that attendance is limited. We kindly ask all interested individuals to register via the link provided. Confirmation and additional details will be sent by email following registration.
